The three artworks I have posted are part of the new series and also part of a new movement I will like to express as Art in the WORD.  Let me please define.  The movement's mission is to create artistic expression that glorifies God.  Creating Art that is considered Vertical as defined by James MacDonald in his recently published book entitled, Vertical Church.  I am adapting MacDonald's  four pillars as my own in how I will for now on express artistic expression  

1. Unashamed adoration- expressing treasure of God in artistic means

2. Preaching- communicating God's Word in truth, mercy, & grace.  

3. Evangelism- expressing God's Glory without giving myself, the artist praise but praising the Lord

4. Prayer- creating an expression to build a relationship with Christ.  Then process or prayer at which

                 the art is created is just as important as the finished process.

The piece entitled, O, represents that ‘hole’’; the emptiness of one’s individual private pain.  Sometimes our emotions have no boundaries.  We cope, handle and heal in a world that biblically is not our home.  

R- REGION

‘R’ represents abstractly emotional boundaries which can create boundaries and when/if a boundary should or should not be warranted.  

D- Death

‘D’- The art piece entitled, ‘Death’ questions the boundaries of death and the life we live because one of the things that cannot be replaced is ‘time.’  So I naturally question, define and explore life/death and its meaning.  

PROCESS:

McGarel’s predilection for abstract art is revealed in the preponderance of grids and fragmentation.  This technique offers the viewer their own personal mode of expression; offering an unlimited vision to the viewer.  McGarel’s art combines digital prints of her own creation and  texture paints.

BORDERLESS ART WORK

Greetings:  I am working on a ten piece series entitled BORDERLESS.  Here is the first finished piece of the series exploring one's boundaries.

The piece entitled, Emotions, represents the emotions of one’s private pain.  Those moments when we ask ourselves,  'can this emotional whole ever be filled?'  Can there ever be comfort?  If so, then  by how and what will heal the pain, your particular individual pain?  These are the questions that I personally explored while completing this art piece for the series entitled, BORDERLESS.  Each piece in the series explore one aspect of borders close up and personal.

       I am an active member of these following organizations: Illiana Artists, Tall Grass Arts Association and the Union Street Artists Guild.  

      In 2007, I earned my master’s degree from Governors State University in Communications & Training.  While obtaining my master’s degree, I audited several graduate art courses and in 2008-10, earned nine credit hours towards my MFA degree.    

       Process: My mixed-media works evolve when I take the digital image, change it, and restructure it on the canvas by using acrylic paints, torn or ripped paper or canvas, metal, and various other objects,  My predilection for abstract art is revealed in the preponderance of grids and fragmentation viewed in my artwork.  Both the digital and mixed-media effect invites the viewer (or critic) to observe or interpret the works, by offering infinite possibilities without limitations.  In my latest work, I am adding more realism and as such are using more photography in the art work.    

       Influences:  My art is an expression of all my experiences that have manifested in a collective process.  In my adult life, I have been highly influenced by brothers Doug and Mike Starn. They were the first to introduce me to the notion that photography like paint should have a tactile component. Photography can be felt as well as just viewed by the viewer.  As such, I have incorporated texture in my works by surrounding the torn digital prints with paints, sand and other materials. Other artists I admire are Chuck Close and Henri Mattise who when faced with human frailty did not let their handicaps cripple them. They creatively endured and even strived to overcome adversity, and in the process enhanced their art works.

Esther

Shakespeare said it best with his remark from Shylock, "If you prick me, do I not bleed."  We all at times have felt pain.  The wanting to be loved, cherished, and comforted when our defenses are low.  It's why I think I can personally relate to Esther, the biblical hero.  Esther to me is vulnerable, exposed, naked for the world to see.   At first, her true self hidden by her lies of deception. She was as some might describe as, "a diamond in the rough." Through the encouragement of loved ones, she eventually found her voice, her reason for being.  Esther gave of herself to the King in order to save her people from whatever indignities the king could bestow on them.
